Oh, I have slipped the surly bounds of earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

Of sun-split clouds - and done a thousand things

You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence.  Hovering there,

I've chased the shouting wind along , and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long delirious, burning blue

I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace

Where never lark or even eagle flew.

And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod

The high un trespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

PBI Chapter of Silverliners lost a valued member on Dec. 9, 2001. Marianne Renshaw Hynd fought a valient fight for 3 years with breast cancer, but lost the battle in the end. Marianne was a F/A in the early 50's in NYC and was the founding officer of the Manhattan Chapter of Silverliners. She will be missed by all her friends and family.

"Jack Estes, Passed in July of 2000. Jack passed of cancer he worked in MIA and SEAMTC he had a long trying battle with the cancer and lost he was 74 when he left us. He joined EAL in 1965 and retired in 1987 and went on about his life. He missed EAL as a family and loved working terminal maintenance for all those years. Jack will be missed by his friends and family. May he rest in piece."

 "My father, John R. Steding, passed away on Dec. 28, 1993 of kidney cancer. He was an Eastern employee for 42 years, from right after WWII until his retirement in 1987 (I think). He spent most of his career in Miami holding various positions in Customer Service, Operations, Field Training, etc. In 1978 he transferred to Orlando as manager of Air Freight and retired from there. He then contracted back to Eastern and was acting Station Manager in Key West for some time until the demise of Eastern. That was a very sad day for him. We were an Eastern family in every sense of the word. My Mom worked there for a little while until she met and married Dad. My 3 brothers and I each put in nearly 15 years at EAL and my sister's husband and my cousins's husband both worked there for a number of years. I still miss Dad dearly. There are times every day when I want to call him and talk to him about what's going on in the airline business (I now work for United Airlines). Patti Brown Conrad Who worked in what I beleive was called Executive Sales in Charlotte N.C. passed away on Thusday October 17th, 2002.

She was always proud of her years at the EAL office and she remained friends with several former co-workers and treasured many memories of those days. Unfortunately in her last few years she suffered from various ailments, not the least being Alzheimers, but went quickly and peacfully in her sleep before the cancer that finally took her could give her too much pain. She was laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery in her home town of Greenville S.C. along with her Mother, Father, Sister and Brother. She is survived by her two sons, their wives six grandchildren and was able to spend a few months with her great grandson Brenden. She is missed terribly.

"I am looking for information on Alexander Stirling (Alex, Al) who was employed as a Reservation Sales Agent with Eastern Air Lines. He was hired in Detroit Michigan in 1956. The individual that hired him was L.J. Evans at the Detroit Office located at 1253 Washington Blvd. in Detroit, MI. We do not know how long he was employed by the company, but we know he worked in the industry until 1972 in Michigan and St. Louis. Pier Luigi Vestri, my father, worked with Eastern in aircraft service in Tampa for almost 30 years . He died while in a coma on September 12, 2001. I can't recall another human being who was as proud of his employer as my dad was. Eastern was his lifeblood, so when the company went under is when he really lost his zest for life. He will be sorely missed.

Edward Sikora - February 15, 1924 to April 5, 2003. Flew for Eastern Airlines from 1953 to 1984, 29 years total, and retired as Captain. Based in Miami till 1978, then Atlanta till 1984. KITTY KELLEY-KLECAN

Kitty Kelley Klecan died Saturday September 28, 2002, at the home she shared with her husband Warren, in St. Augustine. She was employed by Eastern Air Lines for almost 20 years, and was on duty at the Daytona Beach airport ticket counter the night Eastern shut down. But those who knew Kitty will especially cherish the memory of her exceptional generosity and compassion: her love for, and devotion to, children – whether they were family or not - and her concern for and care and protection of animals. She is survived by her husband, Warren F. Klecan and family. Kitty’s wish would be that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Samaritan’s Purse (the Billy Graham Christmas shoebox gift ministry for children all over the world), the St. Augustine Humane Society, or the Betty Griffin House in St. Augustine.

My Dad was Captain John E. Mulligan. He died on January 31, 2001. He loved flying, and he always felt blessed to have worked for Eastern. Although I was quite young when he retired, it was always clear that he missed his Eastern Family. My mother was a flight attendant for Eastern, they met in the friendly skies, my brothers, sisters and I owe a lot to the "Silver Fleet". I know that he would like his name to be here with the names of his beloved co-workers. The airline was so much apart of him. Thank you Eastern.

My Father , George Adelwerth , passed away December 10,1999. His career spanned 18 years from 7-21-1965 to 3-24-1983 ( I have his plaque and model A-300 from his retirement). After WWII, he attended Embry Riddle in Miami and after a while with Delta , joined Eastern . As I recall , my father was a hydralics specialist on jet engines but worked where ever needed during his time at MIA and JFK working on anything that had an engine and needed a mechanic. His last home was department 790 MIA. I just wanted to post this for any of his freinds , He loved his company and he is missed.....Scott Adelwerth

MARGE CHASON - 25 AUGUST 2003 NOW IN THE SKY LOUNGE

I am sorry to tell you of the passing of Marge Chason last night. She was cheerful til the end and enjoyed all the cards and memories that some of you sent to her. She was making an album of those cards and some of the stories that accompanied them. She, as many of us did, felt the people of Eastern were our family, as we shared the major portion of our lives together.

Her career as a F/A with EAL quickly escalated to F/A Supervisor, Assistant Base Manager, and Base Manager.

Marge was the "favorite Supervisor" of the MAC and ICO crew members, and shared many layovers and trips with us. Some of us have fond memories of those layovers and/or ferry flights. (For those of you who may not remember, MAC = Military Airlift Command and ICO = International Charter Operation.)

Richard V. Miceli worked for Eastern for over 20 years, begining in Baltimore,then LAX,and finally in the DCA Control Center. While Rick loved Eastern, he left in 1985 to fullfill his dream of owning his own business - the largest stripping/refinishing business in BAL which he eventually sold for profit. He resettled in NC. Rick drowned in his own swimming pool July 6, 1999. The years spent with Eastern were always close to his heart. He is missed terribly by his wife Jane (F/A) and son, Tony.

Homer J. Woods. Passed away August 26, 2001 following a short illness and surgery. He worked for Eastern from 1945, and retired in 1985. He started his career in Greenville, SC. Opened Anderson, SC station. Majority of his career was spent in Montgomery, AL transfering to Atlanta, GA in 1976 retiring in Atlanta in 1985.

I have recently found this website:I would like to announce the passing of my father Michael Fredrick Fluhr who spent 27 years of his life with Eastern Airlines and was very proud of it. He was stationed at ORD 20 odd years and finished with Eastern Airlines in MKE till it shut down. My father never was the same after the airline shut down and he passed away a few years later. I just found this site and would like all to know that my wonderful dad, Willie Owen (W.O.) Loftin passed away January 4, 2002 from multiple illnesses. He retired from Eastern (IAH & Hobby) after 29 years of service as an Asst. Airport Manager. I have fond memories of spending a day at work with daddy at Hobby before "take your daughter to work days" was ever thought of. Unfortunately, he was pretty much forced to retire right before Eastern went out of business. I know he loved the years of working for EAL and missed everyone very much after retiring. I am lucky to have wonderful memories of him and the great people who worked with him over the years. I have his retirement pin (the hat in the ring) and wear it proudly.

Captain Charles Campbell, (Charlie), was killed on April fools day 1991 flying NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Allen Quawiki to a race in Bristol,Tenn.The Merlin Twin that he was flying just nosed over on approach at 1500 feet and plowed into the ground. Killed were Allan, The Hooters COO, and the owner of Hooters son. Charlie as those of you who knew him I am sure would agree was an outstanding pilot. When Eastern died he was a DC-9 Check Airman supervisor in ATL. I miss him a great deal, he was like a brother to me. His bango, and wit were always special. His wife Bobbie, and Daughter Mary Ellen were both EAL F/A's.

Donald L. MacGillivary passed away on August 12, 2004 after a long battle with prostate and bone cancer. Don worked Ramp Services in both DCA and BWI, coaching the BWI softball team in several company and inter-line tournaments. In 1958, just out of high school I got my first real job with Eastern Air lines thanks to my Uncle, Eugene Barrett at LGA. I have wonderful memories of E.A.L. thanks to him. Oscar H. Babcock , pilot for EAL , based in DCA and CLT , left Eastern earlier and returned to his ranch in Sarasota Florida where he raised quarter horses, he was a master in the field ... Oscar was a veteran of the Korean war and was shot down while serving there. OsOcar died in l991 of cancer, he was a good friend and a fine pilot.

My husband, Lloyd C. Tilley, passed away Feb. 9, l987. He went to work in Louisville, Ky. Oct. l955. In Aug. l968 he transferred to Greensboro, N.C. After 30 years of service he retired in l985. Although I didn't work for Eastern, I should like to remember my dear friend Adrianne Hamilton/Stevens. She returned to her maiden name of Stevens about 1991. Adrianne passed away from breast cancer in 1992 or1993. She died in Arizona. Not a day goes by that I don't think fondly of her. She was flying senior FA on the first widebody to go down - the Eastern flight that crashed in the Everglades. Back injuries from that crash bothered her until the day she died. Adrianne was based in DC, Boston, and Atlanta.

Williams, Sr. and Margaret Futch Williams, he was a veteran of World War II serving onboard the USS Antietam (CV-36) and during the final phases of the US invasion of Guam. Returning to civilian life he signed a contract to play professional baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers but left sports to begin his flying career as an Air Cadet with the Army Air Corp at Randolph Field, Texas. After commissioning into the US Air Force he again returned to civilian life where he crop dusted in Georgia, Alabama & Mississippi, flew sea-plane charters throughout the northeast and instructed at Fort Rucker Army Air Base in Dothan, Alabama. In 1955 he began his career as a commercial airline pilot with Eastern Airlines and during the next 30 years flew over 15 types of passenger aircraft from the Douglas DC-3 to the Airbus 300. He retired as an Eastern Airlines Captain in 1985. During retirement he was an avid golfer, bridge player, amateur historian and political commentator. This was an early loss a long time ago. I just found this web site. My dad loved flying liked he loved breathing and he loved Eastern! I'm glad he never saw what happened. He had Capt. Eddie on a flight or two and was so proud! His name was George "Rush" Roberts and he was based out of MIA. I believe he flew close to 30 years beginning with flight training with my mom at Laurie Young's flying school in Jaxsonville. He took his life in 1969..it was the darkest day of my life. His best friend was another Eastern Capt. who is gone, Howard Plasman. What a wonderful man! He died on board a year or so after dad, they are burried a stone's throw apart in Miami. Madeline Willet Raab

Sadly I regret to inform the Eastern Family of the passing of Mrs. Madeline Raab at age 61. Mrs Raab died at her home in Vero Beach, Florida on July 22, 2005, after a long illness. A native of Bardstown, KY., Mrs Raab retired from Eastern Airlines in 1978 as Base Manager for all In-Flight Services at Newark Intl Airport. At that time she was one of three female Managers at Eastern. During her tenure with Eastern Airlines she served as In-Flight Manager for the Sargent Shriver President Campaign, She participated on the Committe for the interior design of the L-1011 aircraft. She also volunteered to replace one of her staff as a hostage during the May 1972 highjacking of an Eastern Airlines Flight. She carried the ransom onboard. After her retirement from Eastern, Mrs. Raab engaged in several enterprises as a small business owner throughout her career. Mrs. Raab actively participated in fundraising events for the American Cancer Society. She is survived by her husband Richard, her Mother, and several sisters. A mas was held on July 26, 2005 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach. Memorial donations may be made to the Susan G. James C. Johnson (age 79)died of cancer at home in Orlando Fl April 6, 2005. I recall being told "JC" started at Eastern in Miami in 1962, and retired around 1982/83. He was active, and supportive of the Machinist Union. JC was proud of his career at Eastern, and loved aviation. His favorite airliner was the "Super Connie", although he liked them all, from early convairs to 757's. He left behind an adoring family and dear friends.

I would like to advise all of the Eastern family the my father William K. (Bill) Gutteridge passed away on 17 Aug 2005. He joined Eastern from Colonial before I was born and left Eastern shortly before its demise. I know that the demise of Eastern was the most devistating event of his life! He ended his working career with the Department of Tourism Bermuda and then fully retired to Palm Bay Florida. The last position I remember him having was Cargo and Passenger Sales Manager DTW. I just found this website while researching some EAL history. I'd like to include notice of the passing of Alfred I. Zimmerman, who retired as a senior planner at Miami after a lifetime of employment with EAL, beginning in approximately 1952 until summer of 1987. He passed away of brain cancer in Easley, South Carolina on November 3, 1997. He was my *stepfather* for 30 years, or, as I referred to him, "He was the father of dreams."

He loved EAL, and it broke his heart to have to leave shortly before they folded, to accept a job with Lockheed.

My father, James R.Grier, passed away August 6, 1994. He, like many of the other entries I have read, loved flying for Eastern. In fact, he had gone to fly for Kiwi Air Lines. That is where he passed away, in the cockpit of a Kiwi 727 somewhere over Nashville, TN. A virus attacked his heart which took his life very quickly. He was the rock of our family and we still miss him dearly. I am now a 16 year employee with Delta Air Lines, and just today we have filled Chapter 11. That is why I came to this web site. It crushed my Dad the day Eastern closed their doors!!! Thank you for keeping the spirit of Eastern alive!!!!!

My best friend at EAL was John Buschman who was manager of the Lord Baltimore Hotel's CTO for nearly 30 years. He retire unwillingly with the demise of Eastern and I still miss him. Judy Phelps passed away in a hospice in her beloved Daytona Beach Florida. Judy was a Flight Attendent for Eastern in New York in 1967 and worked in Eastern Reservations in Miami for a couple of years after. She was one of my four roommates in New York when we all first started flying for Eastern. We have all stayed in touch over the past almost 40 years and had many a wonderful reunion together. Our last was in August of 05 when we went to say good bye to our friend. Judy was quiet a unique character and we do miss her.

My father Capt. Perry L. Swanson on passed June 5, 1995 after suffering a stroke in November of '93. He began his Eastern career on the Corvair and retired on the 757. He loved that Rolls Royce power! He was lucky to retire before Eastern's enemy within took it to the ground but never wore the same smile he had when he was flying. My father, Micheal L Futterman, passed away in Lake Worth FL (Palm Beach County) on 7-7 of this month, or 7-7-7. of complications from Brain Cancer. He flew for EAL from 1964 till 1989. He flew the L-Constellation, DC-9, L-1011, and Boeing 727. He was happiest when he was telling jokes in the cockpit. He commented upon his retirement from the airlines about how much he missed the comradery in the cockpit. he is survived by his son Adam, and daughters Eden and Erin.

My dad (Joseph Brayton Perkins) was a WWII vet & a captain with Eastern till he was forced to retire in the early 80s. He then worked as a flight instructor in Miami until he succumbed to cancer and died in 1986. He flew the L1011 in his later years, and absolutely loved the company and the industry. My Father worked for Eastern Airlines for over 20 years.   I am sorry to announce that my Father passed away on Jan. 11th of this year.  Unfortunately, my Father did not die of old age rather he died of cancer.  He had renal cancer - obviously, there is no cure.  My Father died within two years of being diagnosed.  The last few months were very painful as his bone became very brittle and he was confined to a hospital bed in tremendous pain. 
 
My Father often spoke to us about the wonderful co-workers that he shared many memories and experiences with.  He was a very proud man.
 
For all of you who knew him - thank you for being his friend.  We miss him more than words can ever express.

Capt. Sam Barber, to inform you that he passed away Sept. 28, 2007. He was with the airline from 57 - 85, and flew out of ORD most of his career, with smaller periods of time out of D.C. in the '60s, and ATL in the 80's. Also taught school in Miami. He had moved to Frankfort, KY in February, and was still in the process of getting settled in to his new house. But progress was slow, as he had been in ill health for some time. It seemed that in early September, all his various ailments sort of "ganged up" and got the better of him. I just wanted to tell those of you who knew Sam about his passing. And if you did know him, I'm sure you'll agree that he's not the kind of guy you're likely to forget!
Eastern was such a wonderful part of his life, and a great part of my growing-up years. As a little girl, when Daddy was away on a trip, I would look up in the sky and know he's up there somewhere. Now things have come full circle. Our family would enjoy hearing from any friends of Dad's.

I just heard that Ruth Grafton passed away last week.  She was 87 and had 47 years with the company.  That's about all the news that I have.

GRAFTON, RUTH FLORA, 87, of Ocoee, FL, passed away on Monday, March 16, 2009. She was an active member of the Ocoee Christian Church, Ocoee Woman's Club, Ocoee Historical Society, Eastern Air Lines Silverliners, and she served as an ambassador with the West Orange Chamber of Commerce until 2007. She was an airline hostess with Eastern Air Lines from October 1946 until January 1990 and was most proud of her service with other stewardesses bringing small orphans from Korea and Vietnam to their adoptive parents in this country. After her retirement from Eastern she worked with the Orange County Supervisor of Elections as a polling clerk. Ruth was born to J.M. and Mabel Grafton on May 22, 1921, in Napoleon, AL, and came with her family to the Orlando area in 1922. When her father established a business in Ocoee he moved his family there and built the family home. Ruth graduated from Ocoee High School and Massey Business College in Jacksonville. It was after working as a draftsman in several areas that she started her career with Eastern. In the late 1960's, when her home base changed from New York to Miami she returned to live in the family home. She is predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Hilda L. Grice and Mabel Marie Godwin. She is survived by her brothers, Joseph Grafton of Orlando, and Virginia and Francis R. Grafton, Ocoee; and her sister, M. Jean Grafton, Ocoee.

ruth was one of a kind. beautiful blue eyes. a volunteer not to be matched. she allowed no nonsense but if you did things the way you should, she was a friend for life. I loved her dearly. godspeed, ruth.

 Good afternoon. 

My name is John Lettelleir and I am writing to you regarding my Cousin Dee Lippard (Davis).  She was a EAL FA 1962 – 1972 –ish

After leaving the airlines, she spoke at seminars for flight attendant training.  She enjoyed writing poetry and became a published author

 Dee passed away in Sarasota, Fl December 07, 2003 after a long bout with cancer.  Before she became a flight attendant, Dee modeled for a local add agency in Sarasota. Dee and her Mom, Gertrude, were ‘very’ special to me and the world for that matter.  

Dee was born in Asheville, NC and came to Manatee County in 1956 from Statesville, NC.  After high school she accepted a position with Eastern Airlines and she worked as a flight attendant for that airline for about eight years.  She later became a hostess and business manager for Trader Jack’s Restaurant located on Sarasota Bay.  Dee also worked in the customer relations departments of several Bradenton and Sarasota area banks.  Her sense of humor and congenial personality helped her to be recognized with many local and regional awards in the banking field.  Her close friend, Sandy Metcalf, says, ”she remembers how unassuming Dee was, how good-natured, generous and caring, never letting life’s disappointments keep her down for long”.  Dee was a member of Trinity Chapel in Sarasota, where she was living at the time of her death.

I grew up in Florida with EAL and took my FIRST-ever flight on the Electra and the Whisperjet and later in life enjoyed use of the C-4 passes as an airline employee when I worked for Continental Airlines as a crew scheduler.  I do so miss the business and am interviewing with Southwest and Virgin America at the present time no less.   I have a home in the Spokane area, Liberty Lake, and also sang in the Symphony Chorus as well and also miss Spokane right now and do so hope to return to Spokane soon.   If you care to call, 509-496-3282 is my cellular and I would be delighted to have a chat with you.

I lost a very dear friend last week. Eastern Airlines lost a legacy.

Ruth Grafton passed away.

Ruth spent more than 44 years flying for Eastern Airlines. She talked me and many other flight attendants into bringing orphans from Korea and Vietman for adoption in the US, as volunteers on our precious days off. Ruth taught me so much about so many things. She did not tolerate laziness. She was an excellent representative for our company. A great smile and amazingly blue eyes that sparkled most of the time. I loved flying with her. She honored me by inviting me to her 35th anniversary luncheon to get her Hat in the Ring pin. She was allowed only two guests. When I began commuting to Orlando, she stepped in, giving me hints and shortcuts. I passed that on when I moved to Colorado and met people just starting to commute. Ruth would tolerate nothing less. She helped everyone and expected us all to do the same.

I never forgot Ruth and finally decided to find her again about 7 years ago. I was already living in Spokane, WA. During my search for her, I learned that she was an ambassador to the chamber of commerce where she lived. Naturally, she was honored many times for her dedication as a volunteer. That was Ruth. I finally discovered her phone number and mailing address. I wrote a letter, rather than call. I had no idea if she could or would remember me or even be able to hear me.

I called a week later. She picked up the phone and I said, Ruth, this is Alexa. I have wanted to connect with you for so long. She said "'then why haven't you?". Yep. She did not tolerate laziness. We had a wonderful conversation.

Shirley passed away early Saturday morning. She had been battling a somewhat unexpected battle with cancer.

Shirley was a flight attendant supervisor in MIA for many years. When she had been employed by EAL for 14 years, she was the senior flight attendant on the infamous ‘O ring’ L1011 to NAS. She did an incredible job, with little info from the cockpit, preparing the passengers and crew for a ditching.

Shirley will be well-missed. She has been involved in political endeavors in the southern fla area for several years, in addition to participating in flight attendant functions and reunions.

Shirley Alexiou. Survived by a son and husband, Nick and Jon.

Rest well Shirley. You earned the rest.
